New Google Ad Positioning Analytics Tool

Google have come up with an ingenious new way of analysing your Ad positioning on a page, the ‘Top vs. Side’ AdWords report segment.

It is well known that ads appearing in position 1 above the search results get more clicks than ads appearing in position 1 at the side.

The reporting tool will show how ads perform in both slots and help users analyse the relationship between ad location and clicks/conversions.

A few months ago, our Chief Economist, Hal Varian, wrote a post about understanding the average position metric. As Hal explained, there is a big difference between when your ad appears in position #1 above the search results and when your ad appears in position #1 on the side.
