Health tips for men
18/09/2009
Research recently has highlighted the fact that many men are neglecting their health and failing to take financial precautions against illness in the future.
A survey showed that 30% of men are "concerned about their health" and 27% admit that they "worry about their health". However, despite this, over three-quarters (77%) of men owned up to turning a blind eye to signs of ill health in the past 12 months. Just under half (44%) said they don't carry out regular cancer checks, while 52% have also ignored reminders about health check-ups. Only 32% regularly have check-ups.
The research also highlighted the fact that a significant percentage of males don't have critical illness cover or other protection such as health insurance in case should they become ill.
There are simple steps men can take to improve their health and protect their finances:
- Try to stick to a healthy diet the majority of the time - one that is high in fruit and vegetables and low on salty, sugary and fatty snacks.
- Be aware of your alcohol intake and try to stay within the government guidelines for alcohol units. Two or three alcohol-free days a week are recommended as a minimum.
- Up the amount of exercise you take if possible. Three twenty-minute sessions a week are recommended. Walking or cycling to work and back could help you incorporate exercise into your daily routine.
- Consider investing in private health insurance and critical illness insurance to provide you with access to fast treatment and peace of mind.
